Crafted with Care: Our Handmade Cork Products from Portugal

Crafted with Care: Our Handmade Cork Products from Portugal

At Melanie Abrantes Designs, we believe the story behind a product is just as meaningful as the product itself. That’s why our cork pieces aren’t mass-produced—they’re hand-turned in Portugal by one of the most skilled artisans in the industry: Senior Paulo.

Senior Paulo has been working with cork his entire life. Based in northern Portugal—the heart of the cork industry—he brings decades of experience, knowledge, and heart to every piece he makes. Whether it's our classic cork bowls or new sculptural vases, each product is thoughtfully turned on a lathe by hand, ensuring no two are exactly alike.

Portugal is home to over 30% of the world’s cork oak trees. The quality of Portuguese cork is unmatched—naturally lightweight, renewable, and biodegradable, making it one of the most sustainable materials in the world. Our partnership with local artisans ensures that we are not only sourcing our materials responsibly, but also supporting traditional craftspeople who’ve dedicated their lives to this work.

Every cork piece we produce reflects our commitment to small-batch production and artisan quality. Working directly with Senior Paulo allows us to maintain the high level of craftsmanship that defines Melanie Abrantes Designs. From shaping to finishing, each piece is touched by expert hands and made to last.
