Wood and cork are natural materials, so they need a little care to look their best for years. Here's how to clean and maintain each type of piece from Melanie Abrantes Designs.
How do I clean an oiled wood vase or bowl?
Our cherry and walnut pieces are hand-finished with mineral oil and beeswax. To clean them, hand wash with warm soapy water and wipe dry right away. Never put them in the dishwasher, since the heat and long soak can crack or warp the wood.
How often should I oil wood home goods?
Every 6 months, or whenever the wood starts to look dry or dull. Rub in a thin layer of wood butter, let it soak in, then buff off the excess with a soft cloth. Our All Natural Cork + Wood Butter is made from 100% beeswax and food-grade mineral oil, so it's safe for pieces that touch food.
How do I care for unfinished maple?
Our maple vases are left unfinished to keep their light natural color, so they need different care. Don't get them wet and don't oil them, since oil will darken the wood. Brush off dust with a microfiber cloth. For scratches, lightly sand with 220 grit sandpaper, then 320 grit.
How do I clean painted or dyed wood vases?
Our painted vases are finished with a special wax. If one gets dirty, wipe it with a damp cloth and dry it immediately. Avoid soaking or scrubbing.
How do I clean cork home goods?
Cork is naturally antimicrobial and hypoallergenic, which makes it a great material for the home. For unfinished cork pieces, like our checkered cork vases, wipe with a lightly damp cloth and don't oil them. Light scratches or stains can be sanded with 220 grit sandpaper.
Can I put water in a wooden vase?
Our wood bud vases come with a glass vial for fresh flowers, so the water never touches the wood. Always use the vial and keep the outside of the vase dry.
