Melanie Abrantes Designs Celebrates 5th Year Anniversary With Launching of MARAIS, a Collection of Limited Edition Vases Made From 5 Years of Scrap Cut-offs.
Debuted at the 2018 Paris Design Week MEET MY PROJECT 1000 Vase Show, Marais is a limited-edition collection of vases that combines modern design with traditional craft. As a sustainable designer, Abrantes wanted to create pieces that utilized the scrap materials left over from making her hand turned product line. This process included hand-selecting individual pieces of cork and wood to combine with glass vessels she found in second-hand stores. The cork and wood are laminated together and sculpted on a woodturning lathe to fit each individual glass vessel. As a result, each piece is a unique and original work of art resulting from Abrantes’s exploration of sustainability, material, and form.
In every MARIAS vase, the materials- colored glass, cork, and hardwood- combine to create an object that is both art sculpture and functional. Inspired by the natural beauty of the raw material, Abrantes designed each piece to speak for itself. Often that meant creating fun and whimsical objects that played with the materials’ colors and textures.
Each vase is numbered and signed by the designer. This limited-collection will be sold on her website.
